Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Describe basic networking concepts and techniques with particular emphasis on ARQ techniques and MAC protocols.
2. Encode and decode block and convolutional codes.
3. Analyze the distance and error correction capabilities of error control codes.
4. Represent the convolutional codes in terms of state diagrams and trellises.
5. Perform modulation and demodulation using PSK, QAM and FSK.
6. Calculate the error probability of various modulations including PSK and QAM.
7. Describe an OFDM system and design the structure, coding and modulation.
8. Describe spread spectrum technology in terms of block diagrams and equations.
9. Specify and analyze filtering and line coding specifications and requirements for digital transmission.
10. Develop equalization strategies and configurations for mitigating the effects of intersymbol interference in digital systems.
11. Develop an awareness of upcoming communications systems and their potential impact on New Zealand and internationally.
