Description

1- and 2-dimensional conduction, thermal convection and radiation. Ignition and flame spread. Combustion chemistry. Fundamentals of burning objects. Flame heights and fire plumes.

This course starts with basic heat transfer and ends with the combustion of a single burning object. Example problems, homeworks, and group projects are all designed to be relevant to Fire Engineering practice.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course the student should be able to apply the fundamental concepts presented in the course:

   * Analyse the temperature distribution in a solid analytically in 1-D and numerically in 2-D.
   * Develop reasonable estimates of the convection coefficient.
   * Determine the radiation levels from a burning object.
   * Understanding when and how an object ignites.
   * Construct a heat release rate history for a burning object.
   * Estimate the temperature and velocity profiles within a fire plume.
