Description

This course provides a thorough grounding in the skills, techniques and tricks a writer needs to transform ideas and material into art. Guided exercises will develop students' perception, observation and research skills. The study of selected poetry, song lyrics and monologues will provide an understanding of fundamental techniques and approaches, as well as inspiration for students' own writing.

Learning Outcomes

A student who attends all classes, does the prescribed background reading, and makes a reasonable effort to complete the in-class exercises, set exercises and other prescribed pieces of work for assessment will understand (and be confident with using) the following concepts and techniques: alliteration, assonance, consonance, onomatopoeia, rhyme (“stressed”, “unstressed”, eye, internal, imperfect/half), figurative language (simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, synecdoche, metonymy), oxymoron, paradox, syntax, diction, denotation, connotation, atmosphere, tone, point of view, persona, form, structure, stanza, symbolism (conventional, original), foot, rhythm, metre, free verse, blank verse, end-stopped line, run-on line, caesura, repetition, refrain (chorus), allusion (classical, Biblical, historical, literary), intertextuality, and punctuation (for poetry, song lyrics & monologues).

Students’ perception and their observational and research skills will also be developed.
