Description

Manufacturing processes, metrology and conceptual design. Introduction to CAD.

The course seeks to make students aware of effective design communications, the design decision-making process, Computer Aided Design (CAD) and the use of standard components/materials such as metric fasteners and rolled hollow sections (RHS). To achieve this, students will actively undertake Embodiment and Detailed design tasks, set in the context of the formalized design process.

Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes
Students should be able to:
 Competently apply the Engineering Drawing Standard, SAA/SNZ HB1:1994 – Technical Drawing for Students
 Communicate effectively through the use of sketching and drawing techniques
 Adopt terminology and vocabulary of basic engineering components, systems and manufacturing processes
 Confidently read and understand orthographic drawings
 Create Detailed and Assembly Drawings in CAD  
 Confidently model engineering components and assemblies in CAD
 Select a manufacturing process
 Choose appropriate techniques for joining components and materials

Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Final exam 40% This exam will cover all term 3 and 4 material.
CNC and GD&T Labs 10% Assessed on day of lab during term 3
Practical assignment 15% Operate, strip, inspect, measure, rebuild and operate a modern small engine. Completed in groups of 4 students. Students should check group time and day allocations with lecturer. All to be completed by Friday 17th October 2014.
6 CAD/Solidworks tutorials 15% 2% available for completion of each tutorial, bonus 3% available for creative CAD design added to the tutorial output (due 9am Friday 22nd August 2014)
SolidWorks CAD and design task 22 Aug 2014 20%
