Description

Dimensional similarity, boundary layers, turbulence, introductory heat transfer.

The course is split in two parts. A fluid mechanics part which build on ENME 224 Fluid Mechanics A and a heat transfer part following on from ENME 225 Engineering Thermodynamics A.

• In the fluid mechanics, the conservation laws in differential forms are introduced (the Navier-Stokes equations) and simple viscous flow solutions are derived (Poiseuille or Couette flows). The course then covers external flows which are important in aerodynamics, for example, to understand the origin of lift and drag. The course provides the students with the necessary tools to understand such flows: potential flow and boundary layer theories. Finally, dimensional analysis and similitude are introduced to understand how to analyse a prototype from a scaled model.  

• In heat transfer, the 3 main modes of heat transfer are introduced (conduction, convection, and radiation) with their associated laws. The course covers the basics of fins to enhance heat transfer and the lumped capacitance method to described the transient cooling/heating of bodies. The underlying principles of heat exchangers are explained and correlations to describe forced or natural convective heat transfer are introduced. Finally blackbody and greybody radiation is covered and the radiative heat transfer between surfaces explained.
