Children's Book Illustration
Description
In this course students will explore and experience the creation of artwork specific for children's literature. Over five weeks, students will create a picture book, learning the skills, practices and stages of illustration for children's literature. We will trace the vast and rich history of children’s books, inquire into contemporary practices and developments within the publishing industry, understand a range of media and techniques available, and critically analyse the role and possibilities of visual representation within children's literature.

Artist’s Proof: an introduction to screen printing
Description
This undergraduate course will introduce students to the hands-on techniques, historical precedence, and politics of screen print editions. Students will generate a body of work which will be informed by a range of approaches to this practice, which have been developed by key artists, art movements and groups who have sought alternative mechanisms to distribute their work and/or make their work available to a wide set of audiences or disrupt perceived values around notions of originality. In this course students will be instructed on how to make silkscreen prints on paper and fabric for creative and studio purposes. As part of this process they will be introduced to the studio practices associated with safe chemical handling and screen preparation, inking and printing processes, as well as colour registration and clean-up processes. They will develop an awareness of how to construct images from inception to final resolution, which is visually impactful and knowing of the discipline that they are operating within. They will also learn about the important historical and contemporary material/figures that has shaped this discipline and continues to make it relevant as a tool for visual and political discourse in art and the public domain.

From dirt to desire: an introduction to ceramics
Description
This undergraduate course will introduce students to the hands-on techniques, historical precedence, and discourse around ceramics and its place in the craft and art worlds. Students will generate a body of work which will be informed by a range of approaches to this practice, which have been developed by key makers, art and craft movements and groups who have sought shift the place and value of this discipline in the arts and crafts scenes. In this course students will be instructed on the basic principles of how different clay materials operate and can be utilized to generate a range of domestic ware and more expressive ceramic results. As part of this process, they will be introduced to this discipline’s studio practices associated with safe handling of materials, a range of making processes (hand building and pottery wheel techniques), kiln staking and firing methods, glazing, and finishing. They will develop an awareness of how to construct clay objects from inception (including the different histories and qualities of different clays) to final resolution. They will also learn about the important historical and cultural material/figures that has shaped this discipline in Aotearoa and which continues to make it a critically important creative practice today.
