Description

An introduction to trees and their environment. A basic understanding of environmental and climatic effects on trees will underpin methods of species selection, growing and maintaining trees and site specific management.

The course provides an introduction to trees and their environment. A basic theoretical understanding of environmental and climatic effects on trees will underpin methods for species selection, growing and maintaining trees, and site specific management. The theoretical component of the course is followed by a comprehensive examination of operational use of trees in a variety of urban and rural landscapes. The aim is to appreciate how an understanding of tree function and growth can inform choices of species for use in environmentally and climatically different ecosystems and land use types.

Learning Outcomes

Students will:

· Understand the environmental and climatic factors that influence tree growth and function

· Understand the roles played by trees in a variety of ecosystems and land use types.

· Be able to select and apply basic practices, such as tree choice, establishment and management.

· Independently manage decision-making about trees.

· Be able to advise others in the wise use of trees in the right sites.

There are no required or recommended texts. All learning material is provided in class.

Notes

This course has no pre-enrolment requirements, enabling any student to enrol and gain from it.  In order to avoid possible clashes with other courses, it is taught in the evening.  Field trip dates (three Saturdays) will be advised at the commencement of the course.
