Syllabus:
Principles of ecology, ecosystem ecology, physical conditions, resource uptake, nutrient and energy flows, stable isotopes
Population ecology, life histories, life tables, dispersal, mutualisms, competition, herbivory, pathogens.
Predator-prey dynamics, optimal foraging, refuge use and heterogeneity, carrying capacity, pest control. Food webs, metapopulation dynamics, keystone species.
Diversity, disturbance, succession. History of NZ ecosystems since last glaciation.

* There is a compulsory field trip:
The main autumn study break field trip is to Cass, a four day trip, on in 2006 EITHER 20-23 April, OR 23-26 April OR 26-29 April. There will be a charge for transport from Christchurch and food of $62.  You will be advised of Cass trip details early in the first term. Note that the field trip is compulsory and provides the source of all the interm assessment.

Learning Outcomes

  • This course is designed to teach the key principles of ecology in a New Zealand context, including the reasons for the present distributions of plants and animals. You will learn many of the important species in the native biota; identification and field work skills; and the history of landscapes in Canterbury New Zealand.

BIOL112 and BIOL113 or their equivalents.
