Description

This course covers a range of topics relating to the French language; its sounds, words, history, how it is used in society and the linguistic situation in France.

This course is for students interested in languages and/or linguistics in general. Lectures, tutorials and reading materials are in English.

Learning Outcomes

  • At the end of this course, students will have developed:
  •   specialised knowledge in French phonetics, phonology, morphology, and sociolinguistic
        varieties;
  •   an ability to contextualise their understanding of the French language through its history, its
        regional and social linguistic differences;
  •   an enhanced intercultural understanding of French society and French language;
  •   an in-depth consideration for the French language and its use in society
