This course covers a range of topics relating to the French language; its sounds, words, history, how it is used in society and the linguistic situation in France
This course is for students interested in languages and/or linguistics in general. Lectures are in English and tutorials are in French. Reading material is in French when appropriate.
At the end of this course, students will have developed: specialised knowledge in French phonetics, phonology, morphology, and sociolinguistic varieties; an ability to contextualise their understanding of the French language through its history, its regional and social linguistic differences; an enhanced intercultural understanding of French society and French language; an in-depth consideratin for the French language and its use in society; critical and analytical skills.
