Description

This course will provide students with a general introduction to debates in resource and environmental management, an understanding of the policies and practices of such management in New Zealand, a critical analysis of the concepts upon which these are based, and an insight into practical issues in this field, including environmental and social impact analysis and the Resource Management Act.

Learning Outcomes

  • After completing this course, we expect you to have gained the following:
  •         An understanding of key concepts of the political economy of contemporary resource and environmental management, with emphasis on New Zealand and reference to other countries;
  •         An understanding of some of the ways humans interact with, shape, and sometimes transform landscapes;
  •         An understanding of the institutional players in New Zealand resource management, and how they work together, or at odds, to manage, conserve, exploit, or transform natural resources;
  •         An understanding of how the Resource Management Act works and how it is applied, along with the implementation of Assessments of Environmental Effects.

Prerequisites

Any 30 points of 100 level geography, or
GEOG106 and ENVR101, or
entry with approval of the Head of Department.

Field Trip

There will be one field trip, of one day, to Cass Field Station, on 29 or 30 September.  
Students will be randomly assigned into the Saturday or the Sunday field trip.  
During the first week of class, you will be able to swap with one another.

Indicative Fees

Domestic fee $850.00
