Description

The course is built around the geological development of New Zealand and Antarctica and will focus on the evolution of the Pacific sector of the Gondwana margin and its break-up to form the Southern Ocean and the austral continents. The connecting theme will be regional tectonics and an integration of data from magmatic, metamorphic and sedimentary basin histories into a consistent tectonic story. The validity of a range of tectonic and terrane models will be assessed.

Assessment

Assessment will be based on three pieces of in-term work. A 'preparatory' piece in the form of an abstract and table of contents (30%)  a major report selected from a list of topics  presented at the beginning of the course (50%), and an oral presentation in term 4 (20%).

The Mesozoic Pacific basin and accretionary complexes of the margin; The Antarctic continent and the Antarctic plate –overview; Magmatic arcs of the Pacific Gondwana margin (southeast); Magmatic arcs of the Pacific Gondwana margin (southwest;  Cretaceous post-subduction magmatism in Antarctica and New Zealand; Tectonic basis for the development of the Southern Ocean.
Topics in theme 2 are likely to be
Antarctic Precambrian and the origin of the Gondwana continent; introduction to the Ross-Delamerian Orogen in, Antarctica and Australia and NZ; Overview of Ordovician and Silurian rocks in the Takaka & Buller tns, Victorian sedimentary belts, Tasmania and in Antarctica; Student presentations on agreed key relating to the Ross Orogen and Lachlan Fold Belt topics: Cambrian of the Bowers terrane and Takaka terrane and tectonic setting; Regional synthesis and tectonic models.
