Special Topic

The HAZM408 course provides background concepts for utilizing Geographic Information Systems in hazard and disaster management situations and practices. Although the course assumes no background in GIS, it will progress relatively quickly in Term 4 after students have gained initial familiarity with GIS in Term  3.  

Course Content
• Familiarisation with ArcGIS suite -- with a focus on geological, hazard and risk applications
• Data acquisition and uploading with GPS
•1 day workshop learning and using the multi-hazard loss assessment tool 'Riskscape' with GNS Science/NIWA

Learning Outcomes

  • Students successfully completing this course will:
  • Be familiar with the concepts and applications of GIS relevant to hazard & disaster management
  • Be able to adapt hazard & disaster management information to GIS-compatible format.
  • Be able to carry out GIS analyses of data to provide decision-makers with useful information.

Special Topic 2010 - Introduction to GIS

Course Content: Functions of ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcToolbox. Data file formats (raster data, vector data, File-Geodatabase). Organizing projects, georeferencing, projections, coordinate systems, digitizing (including editing and advanced editing functions). Assigning attributes, labeling, modify symbology. Queries (select by attributes, select by location). Spatial Analyst (raster calculator, convert, reclassify, resample, surface analysis, interpolation methods). 3D-Analyst (create TIN, surface analysis, convert). ArcScene (including animation). ArcGlobe. Vectorization of raster data by ArcScan. Hazard assessment (single & multi-criteria analysis, analytical hierarchy process). Layout.
