This course introduces students to key factors influencing health in New Zealand, health across the life course (health and development), disability, and major diseases in New Zealand. The course includes topics such as M?ori health, mental health, child health, adolescent health, disability, Gender and health, Health and behaviour, and Ethics and health, illustrated with case studies.
IntroductionNew Zealand has a dynamic health care system with new services and roles being developed to address health needs and improve the effectiveness of available services. The health of a nation is affected by local variables that can include the environment, social and economic policies, and available housing and health services. As such, New Zealand has a unique health profile that must be acknowledged if health services are to be effective.
By the end of the course tudents will be able to:Identify the key factors influencing health in New ZealandRecognise the major causes of disability in New ZealandIdentify the major diseases affecting New ZealandersDemonstrate an understanding of the way health needs can create ethical issues at individual and population levels

Lectures and Lecturers:The course will be taught by Dr Lauretta Muir, Course co-ordinator and lecturer, University of Canterbury, and a number of guests invited from within the University and the health sector.
