Description

This course provides introductory training in motivating behaviour change, including theory, research and practice, with particular emphasis on motivational interviewing.

Learning Outcomes

Learning aims and objectives of the paper are to:
• Provide an understanding of the theoretical basis of Motivational Interviewing (MI)
• Develop knowledge of the practice of MI
• Develop an awareness of the professional, ethical, cultural issues in the practice of MI
• Develop knowledge of the research evidence related to MI.

Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Video Assessment of Simulated Responses (VASE-RNZ) 10 Mar 2025 20% This assessment provides the student with the opportunity to assess their current motivational Interviewing skills. The assessment will be undertaken in real-time on 10th March at 4.00pm via Zoom. The assessment will take 30 minutes
Reflective log 11 Apr 2025 10% This assessment provides an opportunity for the student to reflect on the content of the programme and how it relates to their fields of interest.
Audio of Motivational Interviewing with self-coding using the MITI 4.2.1 11 Apr 2025 35% This assessment provides the student with the opportunity to assess their level of proficiency in motivational interviewing skills.
Ethical use of MI essay 24 Apr 2025 35% This assessment consists of critically evaluating the ethical issues of motivational interviewing within a field of practice
