This course introduces students to key principles in business systems analysis and the development of information systems. Coverage includes information systems planning, requirements analysis and design; key modelling concepts applicable to structured and object-oriented approaches to business analysis and documentation; graphical methods for representing data structures and database design; principles of user interface design; prototyping; communication skills; and project management.
The aim of this course is to help students develop an understanding of how business information systems solutions are developed through the activities of systems planning, analysis, design and implementation. Key modelling concepts applicable to both traditional (structured) and object-oriented (OO) approaches to systems development are also introduced.
At the end of this course, it is expected that students will be able to: Recognise and apply key modelling concepts applicable to both structured and object-oriented approaches to systems development. Identify and understand key aspects of the systems development process, from project planning through to analysis, design and implementation including key activities and key deliverables. Recognise and perform key activities associated with the analysis of business systems, including the analysis of business problem, determining information needs, and selecting an IS-based strategy/solution to address the business need. Select and apply various strategies, tools, and modelling concepts and techniques related to traditional, object-oriented and other approaches (e.g. develop Entity-Relational/Class models, context/data flow diagrams, use cases) to the analysis and design of a business information system. Recognise and apply key principles of good user interface design. Work as a team to perform key activities associated with project planning and the analysis and design of an IS solution to a business problem or need. Use various tools (e.g. MS Project, MS Visio) to support the planning, analysis, and design of an IS project.
