This course aims to develop an understanding of the role and responsibilities of a project manager, the challenges of IS project management, and the tools and techniques for successful IS project management.
This course introduces students to the role and responsibilities of a project manager, the challenges of IS project management, and the application of tools and techniques for successful management within the IS project life cycle. Although project management has been an established field for many years, managing information technology projects requires ideas and information that go beyond standard project management. The course will address the theoretical and practical aspects of IS project management associated with various development environments.
The objectives of the course are:1. Demonstrate an understanding of the key principles and considerations that underlie the management of an IS project.2. Recognise and understand the role and responsibilities of the project manager, and importance of good project management for IS project success.3. Understand, select and apply various techniques and methods to the initiating, planning, execution, and monitoring and control of an IS project.4. Analyse and assess the IS-related needs of a client organisation, identify, plan for, manage and negotiate key deliverables that meet the needs of the client organisation and can be delivered, on time, within budget. Key outputs will be documented in an approved project plan.5. Work as a team to perform key activities associated with the management of an IS project.6. Use various project management tools (e.g. MS Project) to help plan and manage an IS project.
