Information Systems Research

Description

The course focuses on current issues related to the management of information systems (IS) in
organisations. In this course, students will become familiar with major contemporary writings on current issues in IS management. The major objectives of the course are:
• to examine contemporary work on important topics in the management of information systems and technology, and
• to develop analytical and research skills by allowing course participants to explore IS topics of particular interest to them.

The first objective will be met by a series of seminars designed to examine current work on leading topics in the management and/or use of IS. The emphasis in these sessions will be on critically evaluating IS theory and the contributions on current issues to research and practice. Students will therefore be expected to carry out critical analysis of major works.

The second objective will be met by each student working individually on a topic of their choice. Drawing on major works, students will identify an IS management issue of interest, review the appropriate literature, prepare a comprehensive assessment of the previously published work, and suggest and justify a way forward for future work. The output of this work will be a comprehensive literature review that brings together the related literature in the topic area, demonstrates an ability to integrate different perspectives and identify key gaps in the research that if addressed, would make a useful contribution to research and/or practice; this report will be submitted at the end of the course
