Students are introduced to the entrepreneurial worldview that opportunities for innovation can be found across geographic, socioeconomic, industry, and cultural boundaries. Students must demonstrate an entrepreneurial mindset through which they constantly seek to recognize innovation opportunities, across multiple contexts. Students are required to identify innovation opportunities that are local, national, and international in scope.
Innovation courses focus on equipping students with five core competencies (critical thinking, teamwork, problem solving, opportunity recognition, and communication), and preparing them to be competitive in a dynamic global marketplace. This course will provide students with a people centric, collaborative, optimistic and experimental way of working to identify and create opportunities to help solve complex problems. The objectives of the course are:Describe and apply a user centred process for opportunity recognition, creation and development.Identify opportunities found across multiple contexts including geographical, socioeconomic, industry and cultural boundaries.Demonstrate a range of user centred discovery and understanding tools to develop insight into an opportunity.Create and evaluate a range of innovative solutions in response to areas of opportunity.Construct and deliver a compelling message, both written and verbally, in order to build support for an innovative solution.Learning Objectives, BComStudents have an in-depth understanding of their majoring subject and are able to critically evaluate and, where applicable, apply this knowledge to topics/issues within the discipline.Students have a broad understanding of the key domains of commerce.Students will develop key skills and attributes sought by employers which can be used in a range of applications. Students will be aware of and understand the nature of biculturalism in Aotearoa New Zealand, and its relevance to their area of study and/or their degree.
