Elementary Japanese
JAPA142 in the second semester continues on from JAPA141. By the end of the course students should be able to understand and actively use basic modern Japanese grammar and vocabulary. They will also have learned to read and write the kana syllabaries (hiragana and katakana), as well as approximately 170 Sino-Japanese characters (kanji).There are five contact hours each week, one hour of which is devoted to improving students’ aural and oral skills through the use of a variety of teaching materials, including video and audio tapes.
JAPA141 (Level 2 NCEA with 15 credits or above in Japanese) or equivalent. Direct entry is through a placement test and approval of the Programme Director.
