Description

An introduction to Translation Studies for students skilled in two or more languages, including aspects of modern theory and practice in the craft of accurate translation.

This is an introduction to theory of translation and initiation into practice. It is not a full-blown “Diploma in Translation Studies” and covers only some of that ground.
It is at 4th-year level, for students who are doing Honours in any one of our six language programmes.  
It is a first-semester course. But there is some flexibility here. We could overlap into the 2nd semester.
Students will be translating into English, for most of their assignments, but some work will be translating out of English, with all students tackling the same text.

Expectations:
Students in this language course are expected to attend two hours of class per week in the first semester, to take part in class discussion, to consult when required with their “supervisor” and to do the assignments on time.

Outcomes:
As a student in this course you will acquire a conceptual framework for thinking and talking about translating, and for choosing appropriate strategies for various translating tasks. You will also develop practical skills in a range of realistic translating tasks. This will make you more likely to deliver good translations.
It will also be good preparation for embarking on more specialised professional courses for trainee translators (at Auckland University or overseas).
