Description

The history and principles of land law.

Land Law is one of the compulsory “core” subjects of the Law course.  The primary aims of the course are:
•  To develop your understanding of the main concepts and principles of Land Law in New Zealand, including some introduction to equitable concepts;  
and
•  To develop your skills in applying these concepts and principles to solve problems.

Like other courses in the Law School, Land Law aims to develop skills considered important for lawyers, whether or not you choose to enter private legal practice.  These skills include capacity to -

•  read and interpret legislation
•  read and analyse cases
•  solve problems by reasoned analysis
•  put forward arguments clearly and persuasively
•  evaluate critically existing legal principles and institutions.


Please note:  The related Advanced Land Law Course is Laws 393 Advanced Land Law which is offered in 2009 and every following alternate year.

Prerequisites

(i) LAWS101; and (ii) LAWS110 from 2012

The course will be assessed by way of a midsessional test (25%), a compulsory essay (10%) and a final examination (65%).

A new updated New Zealand Land Law text will be available some time in 2009.  Students are advised NOT to buy the existing New Zealand Land Law (Brookers) 2005 text.
