Description

Challenges and institutional responses to global environmental problems, including global warming.

The course will provide an introduction to the institutional and legal framework within which the global community is responding to environmental problems.  It will provide a brief historical and conceptual introduction to international environmental law before focusing on individual regimes which seek to protect the oceans, climate, biosphere and lithosphere.  This course will place particular emphasis on cross-cutting issues such as implementation, compliance, equity and environmental justice.  Ultimately, students will be encouraged to assess the extent to which international environmental law is “fit for purpose” in the age of the Anthropocene.
