Honours Research Paper
For the purposes of the Laws 420 course, each student writes a paper of about 7,000 words, with the paper being due on the last day of Term 3, ie 19 August 2011.The group then meets at times to be arranged with the Supervisors. At each meeting, one student will present his or her paper and it will be discussed by the group. The emphasis of the course is on independent research, and the student is graded principally on the quality of the paper, although seminar performance in all the seminars is also taken into account in allocating the final grade. Students are expected to have this paper typed. The Law School attends to the duplication of the appropriate number of copies. An electronic copy must be emailed to the Academic Administrator by the submission date.Preparation of Research Papers - When a member of staff agrees to supervise a research or dissertation paper, a number of expectations arise for both the student and supervisor:• The Supervisor will make himself or herself available for consultation by the student at mutually agreed times.• The student should consult regularly with his or her supervisor.• The initial responsibility of choosing a suitable research or dissertation topic is that of the student.• The student is to take all necessary steps to become an effective researcher. Students who have not completed a legal research course should consult with the Reference Librarian of the Law Library who will assist in the development of appropriate research skills and strategies.• The supervisor will assist the student in the development of the research or dissertation proposal and the structure of the paper and comment upon the conduct and progress of the research.• The student is to submit a draft for supervisor comment.A brief summary of the basic requirements for the preparation of research papers is available in the School of Law Style Handout which can be obtained from the School of Law Reception. The Law Librarians also provide assistance with research skills.

Guidelines for Laws 420 Research Paper Seminar Presentation -Each student will present his/her Laws 420 Research Paper to the their Laws 420 Honours Group. The papers will be copied and students are expected to read all the papers prior to the presentations taking place.Approximately 30 minutes (the time may differ with each Honours Group – you will need to discuss this with your Supervisor) is allocated for each student – 20 minutes for the presentation and 10 minutes for questions. An overhead projector will be available (prior notification to Mrs Couch is required), although there is no expectation you will use it. Please note that PowerPoint is not available. All those present will have read through your paper and your presentation time is short.Try not to stress about the presentation, it is simply an opportunity for you to talk to colleagues about your paper and research. Your presentation might cover the following – why you chose the topic; the main points of the paper, your thesis and its highlights; interesting points that were unexpected but emerged in the course of your research; perhaps further lines of enquiry for the future; what problems or challenges you faced in the course of your research; and any concluding thoughts – was your thesis sound, what do you want an audience to learn/take away and think about. How you structure your presentation is up to you – it is your 20 minutes to present to the group the outcome of your research. Then there is 10 minutes for questions, where you and the group can discuss your research. Again, try not to stress about the question time, it is not intended to catch you out, rather it is a chance for you to explain aspects of the paper not covered in the presentation. Members of the group are expected to contribute to the seminar by asking questions.Cover Page for Honours Papers -It is essential that the Cover Page for your Laws 420 and Laws 430 papers contain the following information:• Student Name• Student ID Number• Supervisor Name• Year• Course Code (ie Laws 420)• Title• Area of Law.You must hand in one copy of your Laws 420 paper. This must not be stapled or bound in any way, as copies will need to be made. An electronic copy of the paper must be emailed to the Academic Administrator at the time of submission.
