Description

A comprehensive overview of traditional culture and modern society. Polynesian origins, traditional navigation and astronomy, today's renaissance of canoe voyaging; creation mythologies, demigods, spiritual beliefs; the natural world, traditional geography of Aotearoa; social organisation, role of women, ownership of land, leadership, fortifications, warfare, weapons, war canoes and cannibalism; the meeting house, customary rituals. Arrival of Europeans, Musket Wars, Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand Land Wars, prophet movements, guerrilla warfare, passive resistance, alienation of land, working within the system, WWII Maori Battalion, urbanisation, renaissance - radical protest, the Treaty today, identities in gangs, hip hop, kapa haka, sport, business, fashion, education, treaty settlements, biculturalism, multiculturalism.
