Description

Discrete mathematics is that part of mathematics not involving limit processes. It includes logic, the integers, finite structures, sets and networks.

Discrete mathematics underpins many areas of modern-day science including theoretical computer science, cryptography, coding theory, operations research and computational biology. This course is an introduction to discrete mathematics, and is designed for students interested in mathematics or computer science. Topics covered in the course include: logic, number theory, cryptography, set theory, functions, relations, probability and graph theory.

Learning Outcomes

  • to develop the necessary mathematical skills to recognize and solve a range of problems in discrete mathematics
  • to understand important ideas from classical number theory, abstract algebra and graph theory
  • to develop the necessary mathematical skills to understand, analyse and decipher some of the old and modern cryptographic schemes
  • to develop rigorous thinking based on an axiomatic approach
