Numerical Analysis
Numerical Analysis is the area of mathematics that constructs and analyses algorithms in order to approximate solutions to mathematical problems. This is a broad mathematical field that includes (among others):• Approximation theory.• Optimization.• Numerical approximation of Differential Equations. In this course, we will study the numerical approximation of solutions to Partial Differential Equations. The course has a good combination of analytical techniques and practical work. Implementation of the numerical methods will be done in the weekly labs and two large assignments. No previous knowledge of PDE's is necessary but is highly recommended. The course is self-contained and it can be taken as a first course in Numerical Analysis.
Investigate the mathematical properties of the algorithms (numerical methods), such as:o Stabilityo Consistencyo ConvergenceLearn how to validate your algorithms and results through the computational implementation of test problems.Use numerical methods to solve real-world problems.Enhance mathematical communication skills through weekly written reports and assignments.
