Business research methods including statistical and qualitative approaches are introduced. Students will develop the knowledge and skills required to undertake academic and professional research in the field of business.
You’ll learn about performing business consulting projects for organisational clients as part of your master degree qualification. The project you perform subsequent to this course will be under the supervision of an academic. Your learning on this course is constructed around your personal development, including to be able to relate to prospective supervisors and clients. It starts with being in the business of consultancy and how and why consultants conduct enquiries on behalf of officials of a client organisation, including the relationship between individuals and teams of consultants and their clients. The course covers the design and implementation of projects, including the student consultant working to the specifications of his/her client. It covers methods for deriving questions and issues that form the basis of projects, for conducting enquiries and processing empirical materials, and for presenting and reporting findings and recommendations. The course incorporates reflecting on these as learning experiences to be capitalised on in the future. The organisational research methods include both qualitative and quantitative approaches. While during the course you will develop some specific knowledge and skills required to undertake academic and professional research in the field of organisations and business administration, the emphasis is on enabling you to identify and develop relevant knowledge and skills of this nature as and when you need them in career situations.
Having engaged in learning during the course, a student will be able to do the following as part of a consulting engagement:1. Deal with officials of client organisations and take account of their needs, but with an eye on ethical and broader considerations.2. Form suitable professional relations with academic supervisors.3. Develop ideas and business circumstances/problems into a potential consulting project.4. Conduct exploratory work and formulate a plan for the project.5. Construct a statistical or theoretical sample and gather empirical materials from the sample.6. Conduct document analysis to obtain empirical materials.7. Obtain empirical materials through interviews, focus groups, observations and conversations in an organisational setting.8. Analyse, interpret and synthesise empirical materials.9. Present the findings and recommendations of a consulting project to a small client audience.10. Apply such generic skills as team working, negotiation, communicating, analysing qualitative and quantitative data, reflective thinking and developing professionally.
Students must attend one activity from each section.
