Description

This course provides a critical introduction to issues related to Indigenous self-governance and economic development for First Nations in Canada and Ngai Tahu in New Zealand. The course focuses on sharing the experiences of First Nations and Ngai Tahu as well as Maori more generally in terms of their efforts at acquiring fiscal powers and jurisdiction in Canada and the pursuit of tino rangatiratanga in New Zealand. It aims to familiarise students with some of the historical background to the colonisation of First Nations and Ngai Tahu, and the modern efforts to obtain financial and cultural redress and press on with the challenges of economic development for those communities.
