Description

Students develop technical skills in an instrument or voice, music knowledge and understanding through performance on an instrument or with voice, and develop a knowledge of the repertoire for that specific instrument or voice. This course is only available to students in the Mus.B.

Public performance is also encouraged so that students begin to develop strengths in this area.  This is the first course in a sequence that leads the student towards MUSA342, in which the student will be expected to demonstrate a high level of performance to an external audience.

Students will attend individual lessons and performance classes.

Learning Outcomes

Students who pass this course will have developed:
*  technical performance skills in an instrument or voice;
*  music understanding through performance in an instrument or voice;
*  a knowledge of repertoire for a specific instrument or voice;
*  a body of repertoire for a specific instrument or voice;
*  public performing skills.
*  Transferable skills:  Setting and achieving goals; time management; performance under pressure; persistence; self-motivation.

Workload:

Student workload (150 hours) will be allocated to:
*  12 hours attending lessons
*  8-18 hours attending performance classes / masterclasses
*  120-130 hours individual practice, rehearsals, final performance

Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Performance Examination 70% End-of-Semester performance examination in week commencing Monday 9 June.
Participation 30% Teacher's grade for participation in individual lessons and performance classes


The performance examination will be of approximately 15-20 minutes' duration, including technical exercises and at least one short recital piece.  Performance demeanour will also contribute to the mark, as will the programme notes provided by the student.

Assessment and grading system

The following shows how to translate grades to numerical scores:

A+  90–100;    A   85–89;    A-  80–84;    B+   75–79;    B 70–74;    B-   65–69;     C+  60–64;     C  55–59;     C- 50–54;     D  40–49;   E  0–39
In a course at 100- or 200-level examiners may grant restricted credit (R) which will be equivalent to a pass for all purposes except as a prerequisite.
