This course aims to further develop technical skills in an instrument or voice, either for students from a non-Performance major (or a non-music degree), or for Performance Major students who wish to study a relevant second instrument (or possibly voice).
The course aims to develop technical skills, musical knowledge and understanding in an instrument or voice, through regular lessons, practice and rehearsal culminating in performances and an end-of-year assessment. It also develops knowledge of the repertoire for the specific instrument or voice, as well as build concert performance repertoire for each student. Public performance is strongly encouraged so that students begin to develop strengths in this area: to this end, students enrolled in this course are required to attend a weekly combined performance workshop (Wednesday 5–6:30pm) and are also expected to be available for at least eight of the Friday lunchtime (1:10-2pm) concerts held in the Arts Centre Recital Room to perform and/or support (by listening to) their community of fellow students, performance staff and selected guests.

Individual Performance Teachers are assigned to each student
The teacher’s grade will consider such things as: an assessment of punctuality and reliability in attending lessons, consistency of practice and learning through the year, technical mastery gained through the year, breadth of engagement with the repertoire, participation in their Performance Class (if applicable). The performance examination will be of approximately 15-25 minutes’ duration, made up of at least two short recital pieces and possibly including technical exercises*30% of the examination grade could be based on "technical" material relevant to the instrument/voice such as scales and arpeggios, etudes and technical studies, orchestral excerpts, vocalise exercises, and works that have a strongly technical component, rather than an artistic/interpretive one**at a minimum, 40% will be based on the artistic performance of solo (or small ensemble) repertoire, and will take into account performance demeanour and presentation, interpretative insight, as well as the successful integration of developing “technical” mastery.* n.b. please note, music performance courses are not eligible for aegrotat consideration** n.b. in the case of some instruments (e.g. brass) it may be deemed appropriate to examine this part of the assessment separately
