MUSA293 aims to further develop students' performance and rehearsal skills in one or more music ensembles ranging from large, such as orchestra (UC-CYO) or UC gamelan ensemble, to small ensembles such as three-piece contemporary bands or chamber groups.
MUSA293 aims to further develop students’ performance and rehearsal skills in one or more music ensembles ranging from large, such as orchestra (UC-CYO) or UC gamelan ensemble, to small ensembles such as three-piece contemporary bands or chamber groups. Note that these ensembles comprise a mix of 100, 200 and 300 level performance students, all of whom demonstrate abilities in a range of instrumental and musical skills. In addition to their base set of skills, students will also demonstrate abilities and experience based upon their level of enrolment corresponding to early, intermediate and advanced stages of development.

Student workload (150 hours) will be allocated to:• 50 hours attending rehearsals• 5 hours preparing for oral presentation• 20 hours dress rehearsal and concert performance• 75 hours self-directed practice

Much of the course’s assessment is as it would be in an equivalent professional ensemble: once you have passed the audition and are admitted to the ensemble, it is expected you prepare the repertoire both through attending rehearsals (and if you have to miss a rehearsal, to let the ensemble/leader know of your absence in a timely manner) and preparing the material between rehearsals. In the UC–CYO or any other ensemble(s) that you join for this course (with the agreement of the course coordinator) the intensity and frequency of rehearsals and sectionals etc. mean there is nowhere to ‘hide’ in terms of being unprepared etc., so there are no further performance ‘tests’ as part of the course. Attendance at rehearsals, arriving in a timely manner, behaving with a professional demeanour, will all be part of the course assessment. At the end of the course, usually after performance(s) are over, there will be a brief repertoire and review test given in an interview format: you will be expected to give a brief (up to 10 minute) overview of the repertoire just presented, and asked some questions related to this as well as the rehearsal process. This is worth 20% of the final grade.
