This course aims to develop an understanding of tonal music by reinforcing the concepts taught in MUSI171 and 172, and introducing chromatic chords and more advanced modulations.

(a) Aural (20%)Aural recognition and identification of diatonic and common chromatic chords and their inversions, using either figured bass or Roman numerals in short progressions for SATB, with a given treble line by writing the bass line and identifying the chords (given the tonic chord).(b) Writing (40%)Harmonization of:1) short SATB chorale phrases with given treble part, using correct part writing and chord spacing, with identification of chords under the stave using Roman numerals or figured bass symbols2) longer melodies with a slower rate of chord change(c) Harmonic and tonal analysis (40%)Analysis of key areas and modulations, chords, non-chord notes, and important features which go hand in hand with harmony (eg, texture, dynamics, melodic climax points, etc)in a short 2-stave piano texture or reduced orchestral score extractKnowledge of all material covered in MUSI 171 and 172 is assumed, ie, Principles of voice leading All diatonic chords including the dominant 7th Types of 6/4 chord Harmonic progression and sequence Cadences, phrases and periods Non-chord notes Other diatonic seventh chords Secondary dominant chords Modulations using diatonic common chords Additional material in this course: Chromatic harmony including; secondary diminished and half diminished 7th chords mixture chords Neapolitan 6th chord augmented 6th chords Modulations to other closely related and ’distant’ keys
