Description

This course will critically examine Aotearoa New Zealand’s past and present foreign policy while exploring future foreign policy directions.

Aotearoa New Zealand, like other small states, is at a pivotal moment as it responds to a complex new security environment.  A series of events is putting massive pressure on the formerly relatively stable post-WWII international rules-based order. The outcome of all of this upheaval is hard to predict. How is New Zealand adjusting to this changing geopolitical environment? This course will critically examine New Zealand’s past and present foreign policy while exploring future foreign policy directions. The course will feature guest lectures from New Zealand foreign policy thought leaders. Students will be encouraged to engage critically with debates and to help contribute to new thinking on New Zealand’s place in the world.

Learning Outcomes

Students will become knowledgeable about Aotearoa New Zealand foreign policy and will be familiar with the challenges and opportunities New Zealand faces in the current era.

Transferable skills:

Students will hone critical reading and information gathering; as well as advanced analytical skills. They will strengthen oral presentation skills and will learn how to write a policy memo and policy paper.

Prerequisites

Any 30 points at 200 level from POLS, or
any 60 points at 200 level from the Schedule V of the BA, or
LAWS, GEOG, or
the Schedule V of the BCom.
