Description

Systematic specification of product characteristics in the context of desired functionality, consumer perception and behaviour. Tikanga Maori and other indigenous protocols for inclusive partnership when working with native flora and fauna. Market research, product testing and assessment methods. Preliminary economic feasibility analysis. Fundamentals of toxicological and allergenic response testing.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course you will be able to:
  • define a detailed set of product specifications for a product in the context of consumer perception and behaviour
  • describe the important physical properties of liquid products and their measurement, including those of suspensions, colloids, emulsions, creams and pastes
  • understand the mechanisms behind liquid product stability, including sedimentation, aggregation, and phase separation
  • consider issues around indigenous ownership and traditional use of native flora and fauna, including Tikanga Maori, legal and Treaty of Waitangi obligations, and ways in which partnership with Tangata Whenua can lead to a successful formulated product design
  • carry out a preliminary economic analysis of a product concept

Additional Course Outline Information

Assessment and grading system

1. Final exam: 40% (during final examination period, time and place to be confirmed)
2. Test: 15% (during Week 7, time and place to be confirmed)
3. Laboratory assessments: 30% (6 labs: lab report for each lab valued at 5% each, due 12 noon, 1 week after each lab, by submission on LEARN)
A satisfactory performance in the laboratory is a course requirement. Failure to submit laboratory reports for two experiments will result in automatic failure of the lab component of the course and thus failure for the whole course.
4. Two Assignments: 7.5% each
Due dates for assignments will be provided when the assignments are handed out in class.  Late submissions of assignments and lab reports are eligible for 50% credit only.
