This course aims to introduce students to foundational knowledge, skills and experience in graphic design. Students will learn how to layout complex information by way of a publication project which will draw together a technical understanding of hierarchical typesetting, diagrammatic design, photographic image processing, and sequential composition/multiple page layout. Content for this core project will be directed by the supervising lecturer but tailored by each student to their interests.
1. Demonstrate a foundational knowledge and understanding of typesetting within the context of professional graphic design. 2. Understand and be able to communicate to others the basic historical contexts and purposes of typefaces/fonts in popular use.3. Demonstrate a good understanding of digital typesetting and composition. 4. Exhibit a good ability to identify characteristics of typefaces and their purposes in digital media. 5. Demonstrate the ability to successfully present accurate historical and contextual research verbally and in writing.6. Exhibit a good ability to investigate design choices critically. 7. Understand and successfully deploy typefaces and graphic design principles to produce digital graphic design for desktop and mobile formats.
Students must attend one activity from each section.
