Description

Unit operations for producing formulated products such as lotions, gels, colloids and suspensions, tableted and particulate materials. Scale-up and operation. Process design, simulation and economic analysis for formulated product manufacture. Batch scheduling and recipe specification. Filling and packaging operations.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course you will be able to:
  • Understand issues and apply methods for manufacturing process scale-up
  • Calculate rates of permeation for common gases/vapours across packaging barrier materials
  • Be able to define a feasible industrial process sequence for the production of a range of formulated product types
  • Engage in conceptual design of fragrances, including product safety/labelling
  • Be able to use an industry standard software package to simulate a production process and devise a batch production schedule or continuous process sequence
  • Be able to carry out a detailed process economics analysis of a formulated product manufacturing process
  • Identify and address any areas where cultural issues may arise for Māori or other indigenous groups

Test (closed-book, 2 hours, Week 5) : 20%
Assignment 1 (3 weeks to complete, due in Week 7): 35%
Assignment 2 (1 week to complete, due in Week 8) : 7.5%
Assignment 3 (1 week to complete, due in Week 9) : 7.5%
Fragrance Design Project (due Week 12) : 30%
