Description

Problem-solving interventions across the life-span at the individual, family and community level using behaviour analysis principles.

Welcome to PSYC457! This is a one-semester, 15-point course in the application of problem-solving interventions of a behavioural and/or cognitive-behavioural kind. Such interventions may address many diverse problems of adjustment and living and be applied across the lifespan from infancy to old age and at the individual, family/group, school, organizational and community level. These applications and interventions are evidence-based and draw on the science of behaviour analysis. The course aims to provide an introduction to the field, emphasising general principles. It is not intended to provide professional training in any therapeutic procedures.

Learning Outcomes

  • The objectives of the course are to:

  • Explain core principles of behaviour analysis.
  • Critically evaluate research in applied behaviour analysis.
  • Apply behavioural principles to analyse and propose interventions for real world behaviour.

Prerequisites

Subject to approval of the Head of Department.

The required textbooks are available as ebooks in the library. The books can only be accessed by three students at a time, so please download what you need and exit the system once you are finished. You will need to supplement your study of Cooper et al. (2020) and/or Pear & Martin (2019) with recent research literature. The library has excellent coverage of mainstream behavioural and cognitive-behavioural journals, books, and edited works. The UC Academic Skills Centre has relevant resources and workshops if you require assistance using PSYCINFO, PSYCARTICLES, PUBMED.

Any other assigned readings for lectures/labs will be provided online via AKO | LEARN.
