Comprehensive Exam in Clinical Psychology
For students who have successfully completed Year 1 and 2 clinical programmetraining elements, there will be a Comprehensive Exam during the Thursday of thethird or fourth week in October that consists of one 3-hour written paper. This will befollowed by a 30-minute oral exam the next day that concentrates on students’answers to the written paper. The exam will consist of 12 short answer or essayquestions, and the student is expected to pass 11 of these. These exams will drawnupon material taught in all previously required preparations, and will be graded on apass/fail basis. It is not possible to pass this exam based on an aegrotatconsideration.Students who fail the Comprehensive Exam will be given a second oral exam duringthe last Friday in October or first Friday in November. The emphasis of this examwill be on the failed topics, although any pertinent material related to clinicalprogramme preparations may be examined. Students will be expected to pass allquestions during this second oral exam. Failure to pass this oral exam will meanthat a student will not be able to enroll for PSYC500 the following year. A secondfailure on the Comprehensive Exam will result in exclusion from the clinical trainingprogramme.
The overall objective of the Comprehensive Exam is to evaluate mastery of coreprinciples and applications in clinical psychology. Since eligible students will havealready completed post-graduate work in the main clinical areas, the ComprehensiveExam is constructed to evaluate the student’s ability to integrate theory,methodology, and empirical knowledge associated with clinical psychology.Students who demonstrate adequate integrative skills are permitted to enter the finalstages of diploma training in clinical psychology (PSYC 500: Diploma in ClinicalPsychology).
