Introduction to Sport Coaching
Description
This course explores contemporary practice and recent research developments in Sport Coaching. It encourages students to adopt an open mindset toward coaching and engage in informed reflective practice. Students will critically examine their existing coaching beliefs and how these shape their coaching behaviours. The course focuses on coaching for learning rather than simply what to coach, emphasizing human developmental psychology and pedagogy. Planning for learning and managing learners is a major focus of the course. Students will be introduced to a spectrum of coaching styles - from direct instruction to problem-solving approaches - with an emphasis on direct instruction and management techniques. Learning is enriched through practical workshop experiences where students act as both learners and coaches.

Anatomy and Physiology
Description
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the structure and function of the human body, and will be fundamental for students pursuing careers in the health sciences, sport and exercise sciences or biomedical fields. Covering topics from cellular biology to major body systems, this course focuses on the building blocks of life and the complex interactions between the musculoskeletal, nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Through a blend of dynamic theoretical lectures, online learning and interactive workshops, students will explore topics such as how tissues form organs; how bones and muscles maintain structure and enable movement; how the brain and nerves control bodily functions; and how the cardiovascular and respiratory systems move blood and vital gases around our body. Students will also be able to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios by analysing how dysfunction and disease (or training and support) can influence these critical systems.

Sport Business and Governance
Description
The sport industry has undergone significant change over recent decades. We have seen a transformation of sport from a community driven past-time to a professional business sector dependent on funding or self-sufficient through profit making, while often still reliant on volunteers. This course investigates governance of sports organisations through a variety of contexts. This includes a focus on board leadership, motivations and structures, including a focus on addressing Maori and Pasifika health and well-being goals and outcomes as a strategic priority for sports organisations. There is a particular focus on Sport NZ’s development and use of Te Pake o Ihi Aotearoa Maori Outcomes Framework and Ara Taiohi’s Mana Taiohi framework. This course focuses on community engagement through the use of marketing communications to create strong connection, action and support.

Sport and Culture in Aotearoa/New Zealand
Description
Sport does more than merely reflect mainstream society and culture. It plays a significant and dynamic role in the production and reproduction of culture. Approached from a critical perspective this course examines sport in New Zealand with a focus on its unique bi-cultural nature and the social and cultural issues related to its practice and its significance in New Zealand. The progression towards successful integration of some aspects of Maori and NZ European cultures is a feature of New Zealand sport on the world stage but the interaction of culture and sport is complex and tied into larger social issues that that are often overlooked. This course examines a range of cultural and social issues in New Zealand sport with a focus on its bicultural nature and how this should inform coaching practice.
