Description

Quantification of freshwater water resources, and methods for environmental impact control and mitigation. Topics to include; measuring flow, quality and ecosystem health, development and application of national standards, indicators (including cultural indicators) and guidelines for water quantity and quality, point- and non-point source contaminant characterisation, monitoring programme design & implementation, modelling resource change, and drinking/waste water treatment methods. Candidates should note that this course includes a block course in the mid-semester break. Actual dates of the course to be advised.

This course is held over the term break to enable industry professionals to take the paper in a week long block. It is held at Lincoln University and in 2017 will run August 28 - September 1 inclusive, 8:30 - 5 pm. It includes a field trip and lab practice. There will be two assignments due subsequent to the course work, an extra day TBD for oral presentations, and a final exam. Check the course outline for 2017 for details (this is often not released until early in semester 2).

- Design and implement a monitoring programme to assess the state of a water environment and assess the effects of an activity on a water body

- Use monitoring data effectively in water body state assessment

- Recognise the need for, and be able to use, water guidelines, standards and indicators

- Understand the role of modelling in the prediction of change in water systems

- Be familiar with examples of water assessment and change management in New Zealand

- Communicate these concepts effectively to a target audience

Prerequisites

(1) Entry is subject to approval by the Programme Director (2) BSc, BE, BEMP (LU) or equivalent qualification or experience in a field of relevance in water resource management
