Description

WRIT680 comprises a single extended writing project, supervised by a staff member of the English Department. The size of the project will normally approximate to 20,000 words of prose, 15-20 pages of poetry, or 30-40 pages of dramatic script.

The final submission will be accompanied by a commentary (approximately 2000 words) that describes the aims of the piece, the intended audience, and the technical and strategic approaches taken.

Students and supervisors will normally meet on average every second week, depending on agreed work patterns. Within the first two weeks after enrolment, a timetable will be developed for submission of sections of draft material, a full first draft, revisions and final submission.

Each student will give an oral presentation on her or his project between the fifth and eighth week following enrolment.

All students will participate in the peer review sessions in weeks eight to ten.

  • write effectively within a particular register and genre, and for a particular purpose;
  • identify and respond to the requirements of a particular audience;
  • engage the creative dimensions of professional writing and the professional dimensions of creative writing;
  • undertake research relevant to your writing tasks.

Prerequisites

Entry is subject to approval of the Head of Department. RP: A Bachelor's degree (with at least a B average in 300-level courses) in any subject in which writing comprises a significant part of the assessment
