An introduction to microbiology. An overview of the history of microbiology shows how it has contributed to contemporary applications. The nature and major groups of microrganisms are reviewed together with consideration of their growth, physiology and ecology.
Microbiology is a broad subject including areas of fundamental and applied science. The course bulids on and extends the introduction to the microbial world taught in BIOL111, BIOL112 and BIOL113. Biology 213 will give you a grounding in Microbiology and prepare you for the third year Microbiology II course (BIOL313). Lecture topics include:- an introduction to the microbial world, microbial growth and physiology, control of microbial growth, the fungi, environmental microbiology, virology, microbial ecology, nutrient cycling, applied mycology.
A strong foundation and practical skills in microbiology and an appreciation of (a) methods of studying microbes, (b) microbial growth and physiology and (c) ability to explain and solve simple environmental problems caused by microbes.

Attendance at labs is compulsory.A satisfactory standard of work is required for all assessments.
There are many "introductory - microbiology" texts and any recent such text would be suitable.
Library portal
No textbook is strongly recommended and any general microbiology textbook will suffice.
For your own safety you are required to wear a lab coat when in the laboratories.
