Description

Molecular structure, bonding, stereochemistry and reactivity. Chemistry of naturally occurring compounds. Reaction mechanisms, synthesis and biosynthesis of organic compounds.

Over the last 100 years organic chemistry has given rise to many of the features of modern daily living that we take for granted.  The products of organic chemistry include medicines, dyes, plastics, and, perhaps more controversially, food additives and pesticides. Organic chemistry also provides the tools to study and understand complex systems including biological processes that are essential for life.  For example, how do enzymes work?  How do we extract chemical energy from the carbohydrates that we eat?  How can we design new medicines to treat and understand disease?

CHEM222 expands and develops the concepts of organic chemistry taught in the first-year chemistry courses.  Because many of you also have an interest in biochemistry, examples illustrating these concepts will be biased towards reactions of biochemical interest – organic chemistry provides a critical link between the molecular sciences and biology.

Learning Outcomes

CHEM 222 expands and develops the concepts of organic chemistry taught in the first-year chemistry courses.  Because many of you also have an interest in biochemistry, examples illustrating these concepts will be biased towards reactions of biochemical interest – organic chemistry provides a critical link between the molecular sciences and biology.

The course provides a balanced treatment of organic chemistry for those who are majoring in chemistry or biochemistry.  The depth of treatment will allow students to continue their studies in either, or both, organic chemistry and biochemistry to a higher level.
