Description

A study of selected Greek texts and unseen passages, with emphasis on the development of knowledge of the language.

CLAS234 builds on what students have achieved in CLAS135 to deepen understanding of the Classical Greek language and culture as well as to broaden knowledge of Greek literature.  Two hours of class are devoted to the set text, and one to unseen passages and grammar.

In this course we will read selections form Plato (e.g. Apology or Protagoras) with attention to close textual readings and specific reference to the historical and cultural context behind these famous philosophical writings. Each reading session aims not only to clarify the text in terms of its linguistic components, but also to encourage appreciation and discussion of its literary and dramatic qualities, and its appeal to ancient (as well as modern) sensibilities.
