Description

CLAS234 builds on what students have achieved in CLAS135 to deepen understanding of the Classical Greek language and culture as well as to broaden knowledge of Greek literature and history.  This course is divided into two parts. The first term is spent working through the remaining sections of the Reading Greek Text and Grammar Books. The second term is spent reading a set text and, if time permits, some unseen passages may also be introduced.

In this course we will read selections from Herodotus with attention to close textual readings and specific reference to the historical and cultural context of the ‘Histories’. Each reading session aims not only to clarify the text in terms of its linguistic components, but also to encourage appreciation and discussion of its literary qualities and historical merit, and its appeal to ancient (as well as modern) sensibilities.
