Description

General principles of criminal law (liability for offences, overview of party liability, inchoate offences and general defences). Major features of criminal procedure (arrest, bail, legal controls on investigation (search warrants etc); commencement of prosecutions; pre-trial and trial procedure; appeals.

CRJU202 is designed to provide BCJ students, not also studying for a Law degree, with a satisfactory level of knowledge and understanding of the principles of criminal law and criminal procedure necessary for persons working in, or with, the criminal justice system.

Recommended preparation for this course is LAWS101 Legal System: Legal Method and Institutions.

Learning Outcomes

  • A successful student will, by the end of the course, be able to:
  •  Demonstrate an understanding of the general principles of criminal law and the main features of criminal procedure;
  •  Demonstrate an understanding of how these principles and features will be applied in individual cases;
  •  Engage in critical analysis of issues where the current law and procedure pose particular difficulties for individuals concerned with the criminal justice process and for criminal justice professionals.

Either CRJU101 or LAWS 150;

Assessment may consist of a combination of an essay, online quizzes and an open-book exam.

The assessment for this course will be confirmed in the first week of lectures.
