This Summer School Course is designed to specifically address current interest in emotions and emotional intelligence in teaching, learning and leadership. Current research findings and interdisciplinary theories of emotion will be explored, discussed, critiqued and applied as relevant to the overall bicultural context of Aotearoa New Zealand, and situated within the individual contexts of the participants. Participants will engage with and adapt a research-informed theory of emotional intelligence that has been applied in international research, in ways that are relevant to their daily lives, and /or support their pedagogical or relevant professional practise. This course will be of interest not only to teachers, educators, and leaders, but also to managers, coaches, human resource professionals, parents, students and anyone who is interested in understanding emotions in themselves and others.
Why emotions?Emotions matter. Emotions serve important functions in our daily lives. They underpin our decision-making, our learning, creativity and relationships, our personal wellbeing, resilience and ability to cope with change. In daily life, emotions communicate information about our own and others’ thoughts, goals and behaviors. Emotions fill the interpersonal and cultural spaces between people. Teaching is arguably an “emotional practice” with emotions at the “heart of teaching” (Hargreaves, 1998, p.835). Who should take this course? This is a postgraduate Level 8 Masters course, for teachers, educators and leaders, managers, coaches, health professionals, human resource professionals, parents, students and anyone who is interested in understanding emotions in themselves and others. This course can also be attended for Professional Learning and Development, if you are not currently studying at postgraduate level, if you meet the entry requirements.What will we be studying on this course?In this course we will explore many questions about the role of emotions and emotion-related abilities in everyday life, with the focus being relevant to you personally and to your professional role in teaching, learning, leadership, management, health, parenting or whatever your role is that involves dealing with people. Questions that we shall explore include: What are emotions? What are emotion-related abilities and what functions do they serve? How do emotion-related abilities relate to personal wellbeing? Can emotion-related abilities be taught? What is Emotional Intelligence (EI)? How relevant is EI for teachers, leaders, managers, health professionals, students/children and others in the bicultural context of Aotearoa New Zealand?What is this course like? You will find a couple of activities to do before we meet on 1st December. You should purchase the required (compulsory) course e- textbook as soon as possible. The first weekend takes place on 1st and 2nd December 2018The second weekend takes place on 26th and 27th January 2019. By the end of this course students will be able to:1. Analyse, discuss and critically evaluate key theories of emotion that are relevant to your individual contexts.2. Critically evaluate current research and key literature related to emotion, emotional intelligence theory, emotional literacy, and social emotional learning (SEL) and wellbeing.3. Explore the relevance of SEL, emotion and emotional intelligence theories to culturally responsive practices.4. Articulate the theoretical basis for, apply and determine the relevance of a model of emotional intelligence known as the RULER (Brackett et al, 2013), to meet your individual needs.5. Articulate the role of emotion and/or emotional intelligence in your personal philosophy of teaching, learning, leading and/or health in the bicultural context of Aotearoa New Zealand, and/or in your personal life.
