Description

This course provides current and aspiring leaders, in the early childhood, primary and secondary education sectors, with theoretical frameworks and strategies for reflecting on teaching practice and leadership of teaching and learning in their institutions. Teacher appraisal and its links to teacher professional development are examined for their effectiveness in improving achievement for all learners. The applicability of learning theory in catering for the learning needs of the diversity of students is explored and there is a focus on the use of appropriate methodologies for gathering and interpreting data and action research in the classroom.

Learning Outcomes

  • Learning Outcomes
    The teaching will comprise lectures and readings in study guides, plus webbased
    additional readings. The teaching may draw on the experience and
    expertise of members of the educational profession as appropriate.
    Course members who have passed this course will be able to:
    1 critically analyse the characteristics of effective teachers in catering for
    the learning needs of students
    2 evaluate and justify teacher appraisal and professional development as
    tools for improving teaching and learning
    3 revise strategies and critically review theories and approaches to enhance
    learning and development of teachers in the workplace
    4 apply knowledge and understandings of the diversity of students and
    their learning needs in planning for teaching and learning
    5 use research findings and theory on learning and teaching to inform
    the role of teacher as a leader and manager of classroom learning
    6 critically review curriculum planning and delivery, including assessment
    practices, in light of research on the principles of good practice.

    improvement of teaching and learning in the workplace.
