Professional Studies is the core compulsory component of the BTchLn (Primary). It consists of a series of courses that are designed to assist students to identify and meet professional needs. This process establishes links between professional practice experiences, pedagogy and learning theory taught by the University of Canterbury. This is further supported by the knowledge and skills students' gain in Curriculum Studies and other Professional Education courses. EDPS262 builds on the learning outcomes of EDPS261.

This process establishes links between Professional Practice experiences, pedagogy and learning theory taught by the University of Canterbury College of Education. This is further supported by the knowledge and skills students gain in Curriculum Studies and other Professional Education courses. EDPS262 builds on the learning outcomes of EDPS261 and has a focus on assessing and recording evidence of children’s learning.RATIONALEProfessional Studies courses contribute to the development of confident, competent, and innovative beginning teachers for New Zealand primary, intermediate and area schools, by emphasising pedagogical knowledge and the processes necessary for professional development as a teacher. These processes are identified as observing, interacting, designing appropriate learning experiences, managing, assessing/evaluating and reflecting.
LEARNING OUTCOMESBy the end of this course, successful students will be able to:1. refine the use of the design process in planning for: implementing, assessing and evaluating learning.2. use strategies to identify and monitor children’s learning needs in a variety of curriculum areas.3. prepare and use a class description as a guide to classroom management and planning.4. demonstrate an understanding of school-based issues in assessment and evaluation.5. use and critically review a variety of methods for assessment and record keeping in a classroom setting.

Assessment of this course will be competency based. Pass/Fail grades and comments will be provided in accordance with the School of Educational Studies Assessment Policy and the criteria for assessment provided for students at the beginning of the course. Course assessment will be moderated according to the qualification Moderation Action Plan.
